Blog Tour de Troops

As we move into the Memorial holiday weekend, I want to take a moment to thank all the men and women of our Military. Many of you know or have read the story of how the Little Sisters Soap Company began – with my friend Terry, the clawfoot tub, and four sisters. What you may not know is that my family is filled with men and women who have served and are currently serving our country. So far, we have had a family member in every branch of the US Military. My father served in the US Navy, my husband in the US Marines, two brother-in-laws in the US Air Force, a sister in the US Army, and even a cousin in the Coast Guard. We are proud to support our troops not just on Memorial Day, but every day.

I’ve spent many hours in post office lines waiting to send care packages filled with much needed items to the far-flung corners of the earth. I’ve sent Kool-aid to Saudi Arabia, peanut butter to Iraq, and tootsie rolls to the Azores. Oh yeah, and I’ve sent boxes and boxes of soap. I am happy to report that Little Sisters Soap products are a huge success with the men and women serving in desert locations. The natural glycerin in our soap, luxurious lotions, and body butter soufflé helps moisturize skin struck by the harsh desert conditions.

One of the most requested items by service men and women is books. This weekend Little Sisters Soap has partnered with the Indie Book Collective http://indiebookcollective.wordpress.com/ to help send eBooks to our soldiers.

For those unfamiliar with the Indie Book Collective, it is a group of independent writers that are self publishing. This weekend, over 30 authors are participating so you can score a free eBook for you and for a troop at EVERY single stop!

Here’s how it works: You visit the author’s blogs, make a comment, and receive the coupon code for a free copy of their eBook. This year, the Indie Book Collective is presenting a blog hop. You can start at one blog then click along the daisy chain, reading all about gratitude, and commenting.

Every comment gets that person the title being given away at that particular blog PLUS one to a troop. Readers can even designate a particular troop to give it to if they desire! (If not, the IBC will take care of it for you, no worries.) When you leave your comment, you are automatically entered into a drawing for wonderful prizes. All the participating authors have graciously agreed to donate books, however many eBooks are requested! In fact, they all donated $15 of our own money to help purchase the Kindles! Little Sisters Soap is donating a $50 gift basket to one lucky winner. So visit, read the blogs, and comment, comment, comment!

Why glycerin soap is better for your skin

by Susan on June 24, 2010

Hi Everyone -

One of the questions that we’re most often asked is why glycerin soap is better for your skin. So let’s talk about it.

First, glycerin is a natural by-product of the soap making process. It is produced by the saponification of animal or vegetable fats. Saponification is a fancy word that simply means the conversion of a fat into soap. The fat is mixed with an alkali such as lye and the result is good ole homemade soap.

Our grandmothers used to make soap using animal fats and a concoction of wood ashes and water. Today, most handcrafted soap makers, including Little Sisters Soap, use fats from plants and vegetables such as coconut oil. So if you are a vegetarian or vegan, rest assured that we love our four-legged, furry friends and only test our products on the closest family members.

Because glycerin is a great moisturizer, a lot of industrial soap companies remove it and use it in skin creams and more expensive soap products. That’s why some brands of soap can be a bit drying to your skin. This is one of the main reasons people turn to handmade soap products. They soften and moisturize the skin better because of the high glycerin content.

So what makes soap with glycerin so good for your skin? Because glycerin is a natural humectant – another fancy word that just means that it’s an ingredient that attracts moisture from the air. So it draws moisture out of the air to the skin. Another reason, glycerin soap is better is because it has a lower pH than most commercially produced soaps. This is important because soap with a low pH is not as irritating to the skin. Glycerin content combined with low pH helps skin retain its natural moisture and stay nice and healthy. Because glycerin soap is gentler on the skin, it’s a great choice for people who have sensitive or particularly dry skin.

Little Sisters Soap Company takes all the wonderful goodness of glycerin soap and creates beautiful and stunning designs for any occasion. Visit LittleSistersSoap.com and treat your skin to the goodness of glycerin soap!

Wishing all our sisters of the heart a great day!

Susan
